BOSTON – Progressive Democrat Sonia Chang-Díaz has announced that she will be a candidate for State Senate in the Second Suffolk District this year. A community activist and former teacher, Chang-Diaz says she is running "to bring new leadership to take on the serious challenges facing our district."
Chang-Díaz ran a strong campaign for the State Senate two years ago, challenging incumbent Dianne Wilkerson in a "sticker" campaign that mobilized voters across the district looking for a change in leadership. Chang-Díaz came within six percentage points of defeating the incumbent.
"I'm in this race again because I know there is still the need and opportunity to do more for our community, and I'm ready to take on those challenges," stated Chang-Díaz. "I was humbled and honored by the support I received in the last election, and I'm looking forward to reaching out and making my case to even more voters across the district over the coming months.
"From improving the quality of our schools and reducing youth violence to keeping housing prices affordable and making sure economic development reaches those who need it most, it's clear we've got a lot to do. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for the people of this district."
Chang-Díaz brings a breadth of experience in Massachusetts politics, public policy, and community activism. Most recently, she served as the Director of Outreach at the Massachusetts Budget & Policy Center. Previously, Chang-Díaz worked as a political adviser for the Barbara Lee Family Office, as a senior legislative aide to Senator Cheryl Jacques, and as an urban public school teacher in the Lynn and Boston school systems.
An active member of her community, Chang-Díaz serves on the board of MassVOTE, a statewide voting rights and election reform organization, and on the Parish Council of St. Mary of the Angels church in Roxbury. She has been recognized by El Planeta newspaper as one of the 100 most influential people for Massachusetts's Hispanic community.
