Sonia Chang-Díaz calls for end to blank checks for Department of Corrections abuse

Press ReleaseAug 15, 2021

BOSTON, MA -  Massachusetts State Senator and Gubernatorial candidate Sonia Chang-Díaz released the following statement today in response to the bombshell Boston Globe Spotlight investigation that details life-threatening abuse of power at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center and negligent oversight at the Massachusetts Department of Corrections:

"It's unconscionable that after corrections officers aggressively beat inmates in a tactical raid planned by top DOC officials and then lied about it, Governor Baker and his Department of Corrections refused to hold any independent investigation, dodged legislative and watchdog inquiries, and failed to hold the perpetrators responsible. This wasn’t just a management failure, it was a betrayal of the public trust that once again put people’s lives at risk.

"This new report is chilling, but not surprising. Across the Commonwealth, far too many people—and let’s be real: it’s disproportionately Black and brown people—are incarcerated in toxic conditions that place their health, safety, and human dignity, and the safety of the communities to which they will return, at risk. The criminal justice system is in desperate need of systemic changes at every stage.

"We need a Governor who will take accountability and reform seriously—not write blank checks for abuse."
